I love knee-high hand knit socks. My favorite pair of socks are knee highs that my mom made out of natural colored hand spun wool. I'm in the process of replacing the soles because I have worn huge holes in them from wearing them so often. I think thats a sign that I need another pair of favorite socks. Thankfully the Spring 2007 Interweave Knits Magazine has the solution-- Entrelac Knee High Socks...and they are even designed by one of my favorite designers, Eunny Jang. Unfortunately that call for really thin yarn and we don't have anything suitable at the shop so I am thinking about using some of the Knit Picks dyeable wool that I have on hand. Now the question is- what colors do I want to dye my yarn?
P.S. I also want to make everything else in the magazine...
6/22/07 Update: After making a couple other pairs out of Knit Picks Bare sock yarn and not being at all happy with the results I am thinking about starting this pair over with different yarn. I know that once they are done I will want to wear them all the time, so I need to make sure to make them out of a yarn that can hold up to that sort of use!

Waikiki Footlets
This week at the shop we got in this great Crystal Palace yarn called Waikiki in several fun colors. Curious about how it would look as a pair of socks, I brought a few skeins home to play with. I am using the "Padded Footlets" pattern from Interweave's Favorite Socks book.
So far the pattern has me a bit confused. I just turned the heel but as you can see in the photos the ankle/leg is only about 1" long but the heel is between 4"-5" long! I hope that this will make more sense as I continue with the pattern. I am using size 2 needles, instead of size 0 as the pattern suggests, but am getting the correct gauge, so I'm not sure what the problem is...
This pattern just wasn't working for this yarn, so I have ripped it all out and started over using my basic sock pattern (size three needles, cast on 48 stitches, basic turned heel, etc). This should knit up much faster and easier, and will still be a great way to try out this new yarn.
After making one sock I realize that the yarn isn't elasticy enough on its own. Sock number 2 will be knit holding one strand of Waikiki with one strand of Mango Moon Capelli for extra stretch.
